the Sistine Chapel in London travel guide

The Sistine Chapel is the best-known chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the residence of the pope in Vatican City. His fame is due to its architecture, which evokes the size of the Temple of Solomon, and its frescoes painted by the greatest Renaissance artists like Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli and Bernini. Under the patronage of Pope Julius II, Michelangelo painted 12,000 feet square (1,100 m2) of the ceiling of the chapel between 1508 and 1512.
Sistine Chapel is named after a pope, Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, who had it built between 1477 and 1480, where once stood the Chapel Hall. During this period some artists, including Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio, have conducted a series of frescoes depicting the life of Moses and the life of Christ. These paintings were completed in 1482.
Since the time of Sixtus IV, the chapel was used both for religious activities and for those officials of the popes. Today is the site of the papal conclave, during which elects the new pope. Photos of the Sistine Chapel
